The Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) covers a wide range of fields that impact people’s everyday life in Switzerland – including yours.

The FDHA is concerned with the following areas:

• Information and Documentation Specialist

  As an Information and Documentation Specialist, your work is highly diverse. Your apprenticeship is based in a library, archive or documentation centre, where you acquire, organise and provide access to a wide range of resources. This role requires good people skills, a knack for IT and a keen eye for detail. Over the course of your three-year apprenticeship, you gain experience not only in your placement company but also in other institutions within the field, ensuring you are optimally prepared for your future career.

• Geomatician

  As a Geomatician, you collect and process data for updating land registers. If you specialise in official surveying, you measure the boundaries of properties, buildings, roads and other geographical features. If your focus is geoinformatics, you analyse and collect data using IT systems. If you specialise in cartography, you interpret data to create geographical maps and street maps.

• IT Technician

  As an IT Technician, you are responsible for designing, developing, implementing, integrating, installing, commissioning and maintaining IT systems and applications. You also provide user support. You manage the hardware and software on individual PCs or within a network, as well as systems used for process control and for collecting and sending data.

• Commercial Employee

  During your apprenticeship, you are exposed to a wide variety of processes, people and topics within the federal administration. You experience how administrative processes are organised at the federal level and become familiar with many internal and external bodies and departments. You gradually take on tasks such as managing files, agendas and minutes, handling correspondence, preparing meetings, bookkeeping and a range of other secretarial duties.

• Commercial Employee with Vocational Baccalaureate (HMS 3+1)

  As an Administrative Assistant, you carry out administrative tasks in a private company or the public sector. Your responsibilities vary depending on your employer and the nature of your position. Your tasks might include managing business correspondence (distributing, writing and sending), bookkeeping (recording transactions, verifying payments), handling orders (processing, invoicing), welcoming clients and running an office. Our interns have already completed three years of upper secondary school and spend the fourth year in a company to obtain their vocational baccalaureate.

• Laboratory Technician (Biology)

  As a Laboratory Technician specialising in biology, you study biological processes, with a particular focus on virology and immunology. You identify highly contagious viruses and their antibodies in various animal samples, analyse viral gene sequences linked to disease and help to develop new diagnostic and research methods. During the three-year training programme, you gain broad experience in diagnostics and research, including at one of our partner training institutions.

• Electronics Technician Apprentice, Work Placement in 4th Year

  As an Electronics Technician, you develop and produce electronic devices and computer programs for operating microprocessor-equipped devices. You plan and oversee the manufacturing process, test the devices and put them into operation. You complete the first three years of training at school, and the fourth year as a work placement.

• Mediamatician

  As a Mediamatician, your work involves graphic design, web development and multimedia production. You learn how to create engaging leaflets, brochures, images and videos, develop websites, and produce social media content. You also gain insights into project planning and organisation, which helps you manage projects efficiently. The Mediamatician apprenticeship combines creativity, technology and communication, and opens up a wide range of career opportunities for you.

• Media Technician

  As a Media Technician, you create products for print and digital media. You create printed materials such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, leaflets and posters. This involves operating and configuring printing equipment and systems, handling pre-production tasks, monitoring the printing process, and taking the necessary measures to resolve any issues. You also handle basic post-production tasks, such as packing and shipping orders.

• Prepress Technician

  As a Prepress Technician, you prepare graphic documents with text and images for print and digital media. With the help of reproduction and publishing software, you scan images, create layouts for text and illustrations, and create print templates with electronic files.

• Print Media Technician (VET Diploma) – Specialisation: Bookbinding

  The bookbinding profession is closely related to libraries, where the work of generations of bookbinders is preserved. Even today, paper pages are bound into newspapers, books and brochures manually and with machines, while cardboard packaging is still handcrafted. During this four-year apprenticeship, you learn a solid trade. You need a talent for manual work, an interest in materials such as paper, cardboard and leather, and a good imagination.
